CHICAGO (Reuters) – More than half of U.S. drug users are unfamiliar with “naloxone,” a life-saving drug that can reverse the effects of opioid overdose and eliminate the need for a patient to go to a hospital, a study released on Tuesday suggests.

Eighty percent of U.S. adults who had used drugs in the last year and were not having an overdose had never heard of the kit, according to a survey by the Chicago Health and Hospital Group, which distributes overdose reversal drugs in Illinois.
“Families at the highest risk of overdose are the least likely to know about naloxone,” said Dr. Daniel Rosen of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System, which distributed more than 35,000 kits over the past six months.
The study found that only 12 percent of those without access to naloxone had ever been prescribed
