My favorite is the mouseover text and related sounds, which are clear indicators of the character’s status (“Ready”, “Poised”, or “Restricted”) but also quite unnecessary. However, in all honesty, this only provides a bit more convenience and adds a touch of immersion to the already impressive art direction.
Story wise, Elden Ring is a classic tale: one man must team up with five other adventurers and save the realm from the evil presence that has taken over it. Your main character can join any party as a magic user, slashing away enemies with swords or unleashing explosions with bombs. And the game allows you to customize your appearance in the creation screen, giving players a level of customization they rarely see these days.
While I do like the game’s character creation, I actually find the main story to be a bit bare bones. The small plot hints that are provided in the tutorial feel forced and don’t feel quite right, as there is no way to confirm if you are actually reading the right messages or not.
Thankfully, the game is actually more focused on the gameplay mechanics. Combat in this title is a fluid action, which makes each hit more exciting than most other hack ’n’ slashes out there. The game is easy to pick up, yet difficult to master, as the different magic powers increase your power, but also dramatically decrease your health, skill points, and exp per hit. These are important aspects of combat, as not having much health, skill points, and exp makes each attack feel more important and rewarding.
