      There were 2,227 overdose deaths in 2017 compared to 2,001 in 2016, according to the report.

      “Our data shows that overdose deaths involving fentanyl continue to trend upwards, representing at least one-third of the fatal overdoses recorded in British Columbia last year,” the report says.

      The report notes that while opioids killed more people in 2017, other drugs killed more people in 2016.

      “The distribution of drug overdose deaths across different drugs varied from year to year, with opioids accounting for over 70 per cent of the overdose deaths in 2016,” it says.

      The report notes that while B.C. has lower rates of drug overdose deaths than Canada, it is “a severe problem in B.C.”
