Akiba’s Note: At E3, we had the opportunity to play one of the most anticipated games of the year – Dark Souls III. We’ve taken the chance to get in some words with Director/Co-Creator of the game, Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Hidetaka Miyazaki:

Akiba: Dark Souls III is the latest in the Dark Souls series. How would you characterize this entry in the franchise?

Miyazaki: This is a new brand and new series for Dark Souls. We wanted to bring something new and different to the series, while still preserving and implementing the series’ core values.

Akiba: What are the series’ core values?

Miyazaki: Dark Souls is a game that emphasizes the heroic spirit of fighting against overwhelming odds.

Akiba: What does “overwhelming odds” mean in this context?

Miyazaki: Usually, the amount of things that come at you is large. You tend to think that your chances of winning the fight are low, but you end up surviving and fighting. Dark Souls is about fighting a little bit over your odds. You’re probably going to die, but you can take pleasure in the fact that you’re going to fight.

Akiba: How does this relate to the Souls series? Do you think many people struggle with the concept of overwhelming odds?

Miyazaki: I think so. I personally don’t understand it, but I think many people are able to find that in-game and love it.

Akiba: But, how do you look at your own game? Are you surprised that players look at you as the hero of the game? Is this something that you’re conscious of, or are you comfortable just with the thought of it?

Miyazaki: It’s something we’re working on, but right now it’s not something that we’re conscious of. But if you look at our previous games, you’ll see that the development team already has a heroic spirit. The characters are always fighting against the odds or against something that is greater than themselves. In the case of Dark Souls II, that character is dead. In the case of Dark Souls III, he’s undead.

Akiba: Are you a Christian?

Miyazaki: Yes.

Rise

The basic actions of life evolve into the hardest, most difficult decisions.

In addition to a story that is similar to the previous game, with the player defeating the enormous Corvus first, the deep story unfolds as the player progresses. The more you play the game, the more stories it has and the more choices you have.

Choose your own route through the game.

The Elden Ring is an action RPG that is simple to control and easy to play. The main story begins with a clear goal and the player can freely choose their own route through the game. It is also possible to choose routes that have their own stories or to select events that unfold in the story.

Battle

Cut through the maze of dungeon encounters that await you as the battle progresses.

As the player progresses through the story, the battle becomes more interesting. While the combat system is simple, it is built on action elements, and the outcome is determined by experience points earned by proficiency in the use of magic. As you win battles, the enemies in the dungeon encounter will level up, which will lead to more different situations and stronger enemies.

Your character is equipped with weapons, magic, and armor. You will be able to increase your proficiency in the use of any of these, so that you can fight with more efficiency.

The items in your inventory are used as a character resource that you will need to use as you proceed through the various stages of the game.

The player can freely set any of the following actions to occur every time it is prompted.

Use commands based on icons in the field. Once the player enters the battle, the icons appear in the bottom of the screen to help him or her act by guiding the player towards the intended event. The commands are grouped in accordance with their purpose, making it easier to find what you want to do.

First-person view

When in the first-person view, the player is in a position to see the world from the eyes of his or her character. It enables the player to monitor his or her surroundings as the character moves. From this view, the player can clearly see the movements of enemy monsters, items, and other things on the field.

If you want to attack or move a character, item, or monster, you must select the appropriate thing in the blue menu on the left side of the screen.
