The malware creates a hidden directory on the victim’s hard drive (H:\Mytob\…) and it uses a modified version of the Run DLL registry and the core DLL of the svchost.exe process.
Mytob has been circulating since the beginning of 2004, and is believed to be one of the many malware generated by Adu Software LTD. It is able to get infected due to the use of unsupported remote infection techniques on Internet Explorer, and by performing certain actions on popular websites, such as downloading, and installing programs.
The Adu Software LTD developers have employed stealth tactics to spread the malware, in order to remain under the radar and protect their identity. After an initial infection, the malware will stay in memory and appear to be the legitimate svchost.exe process. While the mytob.exe process is running, it monitors the H:\Mytob\ directory for any activity. If any user or software with administrator rights performs any activity in this directory, or any of its sub-directories, Mytob is capable of modifying registry values, file names, or their extensions.
After it has stolen confidential user information, the malware will send this data to an email address ([email protected]). While it is performing various tasks, it will also send self-generated emails. The emails will contain a small link to a phishing webpage, and will attempt to trick users into entering their credentials, or accept other forms of security risks.
