This tutorial will cover the basics of FEMM (The Finite Element Method). A user, on completion of this tutorial will have a good understanding of the basics of the FEMM application.
FEMM is a powerful application that can be used to simulate actuator and solenoid effects for user configured physical geometries, where solenoids can be used to control electromagnetically actuated devices and where conventional plunger modeling is also used. This standard modeling method relies on the creation of a solenoid based on a fixed coil and a conventional plunger for which the effects of the coil are applied by directly setting the plunger location within the assembly.
Actuator and solenoid modeling is a critical technique to ensure that components can be designed correctly to achieve maximum performance and to optimize the size, weight, and power consumption of the devices they control.
FEMM is a highly complex suite of tool within the 5DEM Design Suite that can be used to simulate the effects of actuators and solenoids on mechanical devices. Users have the ability to use the application to define and test electromagnetically actuated device components for the user configured physical geometries.
Such a modeling method will allow users to quickly create the physical model, under user specified conditions, in order to test the effects of the actuator or solenoid on the physical object, such as a cylinder or a plunger.
