Add the ImportACIS command to the AutoCAD tools menu.
Use the ImportACIS command to import 3D solids from ACIS SAT and SAB files.
Use the command options to specify the imported file.
Import will read the file but not place it into the drawing. The model will be locked and the model becomes a bookmarked drawing.
For interactive operation import will read the file, imports the drawing and will exit the command mode automatically. This allows you to easily continue editing the drawing. (AutoCAD is loaded with the drawing still locked).

Run the ImportACIS command from the tools menu. The ImportACIS menu is displayed and the command’s command line is activated.

To import the drawing, enter a 3D SOLID command in drawing and select file to import.

I just discovered this plug-in and it looks like it will do the job. It can not harm to try and see if it works with my current version of SAT. It is a little old so I will see if it works. The problem is that I need to get it into the plugin for AutoCAD and it is not listed in the list of plugins on the Autodesk website. I will just add it myself and see what happens. That will probably be the easiest solution.
I tried it and it worked for me. There was an error in the read me file so I could not access the options for it. I will try to figure out how to navigate it some time and let you know if it works for me.
Thanks David, so far I am getting some promising results. I think this is a little bit of a challenge for me with this one and I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing.
I have updated to AutoCAD 2009 SP2 and now I get the dialog box that I need to import 3D files. Once I select the file there are options for some of the parameters. I can’t seem to figure out how to change the orientation of the dimensions of the solid. It looks like it is one flat plane. Is there a way to change this? I am not sure where to locate this. I would prefer to have the import solid aligned to the design (objects) that I am importing it from, but at the moment the top box moves the solid up and down relative to the plane of the design, and then rotates the solid to match the plane of the original model.
