Procurement of software to the government to address trade secret protection concerns has been a thorny issue. Last December, the General Services Administration (GSA) submitted a solicitation for a commercial product to provide trade secret protections for its intellectual property.
At the time, the agency’s corporate partners asked for a solution that they could use for themselves, while still offering greater freedom and flexibility to their developers. To solve the problem, the GSA commissioned LabMD, Inc. to create a new product called “Orange Heap.”
LabMD was given six months to develop the software to meet the agency’s requirements. GSA’s purchase was contingent upon it being able to use the product only for two years.
Orange Heap offered a set of seven tools to protect the intellectual property of a.NET application. The project was open source, and developers were encouraged to contribute their ideas to the project as well. So far, more than 100 people have contributed to the software. In all, LabMD says it has received more than 3,300 e-mails with ideas.
Similar to the other tools offered, Orange Heap provides server-side protection only, so any client-side code changes must take place outside of the protected area. Orange Heap includes support for the.NET Framework 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5.
Orange Heap requires.NET Framework version 2.0 to run in its current release. This provides better maintainability and flexibility for developers. Customers with older versions of.NET Framework will have to run Orange Heap in workarounds mode until it is available.

Name mangling is an effective way to prevent a hacker from directly accessing your source code. To ensure better protection, an application should implement proper mangling techniques. Without proper mangling techniques, one can still obtain an assembly’s names by using reflectors or decompilers.

A very effective protection method is to put the code into an archive file. The archive of the code is able to open when it is running or when it is loaded.
When the archive is loaded, the code changes its name into something unrecognizable for anyone.
When the code opens, it first opens the archive, this is always done automatically. After that we delete the original file (that we were working on).
That way if anyone tries to recover the code, he will be unable to do so due to the name changes and also it will be impossible to open the archive.
