Keeping track of all your computers and accessing files from them whenever they are needed requires help from file sharing tools. Although many users turn to cloud-based apps (such as Dropbox or Google Drive), others prefer the advantages of peer-to-peer utilities which establish direct connections to the remote machines, don't take up space by creating temporary files and protect privacy by not collecting and sending tracking data to the server.
Currently in beta stage, FolderNet is a program that falls in the second category. Lightweight, free and incredibly easy to use, it's capable of creating virtual disks to share containing files and folders with other machines, connecting everything through a simple account.
Creates virtual disks to share files and folders
Following a speedy, uncomplicated setup operation, FolderNet gets automatically added to the Windows startup sequence, which means that it runs on its own every time you turn on your computer. Creating an accessible icon in the systray, the application invites you to get started by signing up for a free account using a name, email address and password. Email confirmation isn't necessary but there's an option to recover lost passwords via email.
Once logged in, FolderNet creates a virtual disk right away called "FolderNet Virtual Disk", which can be viewed in Windows Explorer or any other file manager. To add content, you can either use the copy and paste functions of Windows Explorer or the options available in the main app window. Some preset directories can be quickly added, namely Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos. Keep in mind that any existing files will be auto-shared by FolderNet.
Share files using peer-to-peer connections, without cloud or sync
It's possible to connect to multiple computers not only in the local network but also anywhere in the world using an account, view all machines and shared folders in a hierarchical view, and effortlessly access a folder by clicking its entry in this list (opens its location in Windows Explorer). There's also an option for changing how your computer is shown to others but doesn't work for renaming remote PCs.
As far as security goes, the developer says that the connection between the machines is encrypted and authenticated with the account password, so data isn't sent to the cloud and made accessible to anyone else. Minimal system resources were used in our tests and FolderNet established remote PC connections swiftly. We're looking further to new features as well as a stable release.

Additional tools:
Connect2Network
Since FolderNet supports peer-to-peer connections, Connect2Network is a free tool to identify remote computers and make sure that they’re reachable before connecting to them. After installing, the app can be found on the Start menu. Selecting the correct network adapter gets you started in just a few seconds. Click next and a list of available peers appears.
It’s possible to either enter the machine’s IP address in a free form or use a name. If you enter one, you’ll get a warning of the connection settings that could be interfering with FolderNet. If you try to connect to a remote PC with the IP address, the local firewall may prevent access or redirect you to a local webpage.
Connecting to a Windows machine requires an entry as well but an error comes up instead when the IP address appears (a message says the remote connection to an unknown computer has been denied).
Update
FolderNet is one of those utilities that keeps improving; now the “update all” option has been included in the options menu. The task is initiated automatically when you start the app.
Checking, downloading and installing a new version is as easy as enabling the option in the settings. It’s also possible to trigger a one-way version upgrade (for example when the content is already imported into FolderNet).

Additional information:
Don’t want to install FolderNet on all computers? There’s also a portable app version available.
Managing remote machines with FolderNet is much easier than with a cloud storage service (like Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Box.net) because you’re connecting to the computer directly via a direct connection without the need to sign up for an account or sync content on the server (on the other hand, you can also use folders in FolderNet that are owned by the cloud service).
There’s plenty of options and features in FolderNet. You can even customize how the icon looks, the color and size of the virtual disk, and the name. But, FolderNet didn’t go overboard with options, which is good news as it doesn’t take a toll on system resources.

FolderNet [Win/Mac]
How can I save my valuable files? Create a folder just for that purpose. But… no, actually create one on a remote machine with a sophisticated peer-to-peer connection. Drop files to it, sync the folder with others without any fear of sharing. Only a privileged few can read your files. You don’t need a login or password. FolderNet is the secret, encrypted solution for hassle-free file sharing. Just create one virtual disk, move any folder to it and share it easily with the rest of your remote machines. You can even share this folder with Mac users and Windows users.
FolderNet Windows 8 exclusive features:
Peer-to-peer file sharing without cloud or sync
With FolderNet, the sharing can be done with machines in different local networks or even over the Internet. Share files, folders and even entire drives with only the account credentials. So there is no need for downloading any app, creating backups or copying files to a cloud service.
Easy peer-to-peer connections without a login or password
It doesn’t have to be complicated. For Windows users, FolderNet is added to the login sequence. And it does not need registration or a registration code. All it needs is an email address and a password. To connect to Mac machines, all you need is an email address.
Peer-to-peer file sharing on Mac
It works pretty much the same way. Even though it is not Mac exclusive, it doesn’t need any third-party app installation. Simply sign up for free and share files with Mac users. You can even configure special Finder options to open and handle Finder windows. FolderNet also tells you the number of active connections.
Keep in mind that the connection between a PC and a Mac is encrypted and authenticated with the account password. So files aren’t sent to the cloud, even a copy of the contents of a folder on the remote machine. Minimal resources are used in our tests.
Connect to other computers outside your local network
Even though the app only connects machines in the same LAN, you can of course connect remote machines from the Internet or even a company network. Since FolderNet uses the peer-to-peer network, it doesn’t need to have a copy of the data. It just needs to know its IP address.
Keep your system clean with FolderNet
No extra executables, apps, 3rd party modules and registry keys are used in its operations. The only files on your system are the shared folders created with

Hi NickS, thanks for the kind words. Yes the performance speed is definitely a concern for some users and we are aware of it. We are working on a way to resolve this and will announce it once available. Our aim is not only to bring feature-rich yet light apps to users but also to maintain a certain level of stability.

Well, the installation has been goolged already, so I install it and runs it in vista sp1. After signing in, the app takes some time to load (it can be slow), but when it is done running it the result is quite good. Then I found if I open the app and I continue using it after a while, it will happen weird behavior: it will not only skip several places, but also don’t keep the commands that I am typed, and when I scroll down I will often encounter a mouse error of some sort. So I close the app and sign out. Then if I try to sign in again, the app has several issues, and if I close it again, when I open the app again it almost completely “lose” the previous session. I am not sure if all of these happen because of some exploits of an unpatched virus or something that is specific to the
What’s New in the FolderNet?
FolderNet is a peer-to-peer network utility that lets you create and share virtual disk images to other computers in your local network or across the internet. It was designed to provide the most convenient way to share files to your local network and to remote computers without the need to have a full-fledged file server running on your computer. FolderNet is a free, lightweight peer-to-peer sharing utility and requires no installation.
As the market for IoT grows, many companies are working on improving the security of their IoT devices and making them more resilient. Besides regular cloud-based solutions, companies are also looking at storing data locally on the devices, so they can be accessed in the case of a compromise or device loss. Companies like Seldonium and AlgoSec have already been developing these kinds of solutions, as well as Alphabet Inc.’s Nest security system. Kaspersky has now revealed its plans to develop an integrated security solution for IoT.
The company has stated that its intention is to create a security platform that will include global software, analysis, backup, and storage. This platform would allow businesses to improve security, as well as prevent and protect against threats before they occur. It’s hoped the new platform would be able to offer a complete solution for businesses that want to reduce the risk of IoT security attacks.
Kaspersky said it is developing the platform to support a broader range of IoT devices, including smart cars, home appliances, and, in the future, even wearables. One of the main features of the new security platform would be the ability to not only alert users when something is wrong with their devices, but also remotely manage them, before problems arise. Kaspersky has already started testing its software with the Nest security system. The Nest app has the ability to take remotely control of a home’s heating and cooling system, turning it on and off and adjusting temperatures.
The initial release will be a version of the Kaspersky Internet Security 13, which is currently a free download. It will operate through the cloud but will support devices that have direct connectivity to the Internet. This means that if the internet connection goes down, the product would be able to maintain the security of the device. Kaspersky said it is also working on two more versions, one that will run locally in the device and one that will allow data to be backed up to the cloud.
