Through an evaluation of network technologies and analysis of data logging system, VoteBox uses the web browser’s native HTTP communication for voting data transmission.
Voters use VoteBox as their only portal to the voting process. To check the status of their vote or to update their information (such as name), voters can access the voting web site directly using their web browser. The voting records are automatically updated once the voter updates his/her information.
VoteBox’s feasibility is proven through the 3 states within Texas that have used it in several elections and has seen over 70,000 voters access VoteBox voting web site.
Voting Data Logging
VoteBox records the data for each vote made. This feature allows VoteBox to be verified using statistical analysis or to help to prove the integrity of the system.
Recording the Voters
VoteBox generates a secure hash over each voter’s information. The hash is stored together with the vote by the vote box and is entered into a database. When a user accesses VoteBox for the first time, a cookie is stored in the user’s browser containing the user’s encrypted password (thus creating a one-time password that is used to gain access into the VoteBox web site. This password is stored only on the server in a file. The cookie is generated from the encrypted password and the user’s email address and the web server automatically generates a unique secure hash for that user.
