The HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection software provides individual and/or automatic protection of a hard drive and protects against data loss and data damage. This software detects if the computer is activated by the power loss, when it is in battery mode or when a hard drive is accidentally dropped or is abruptly impacted by another object.
If the hard drive is activated, the software parks the hard drive heads in a safe place allowing the computer to be used as normal. If the hard drive is not in a safe place and it is being accessed, the HDD protection software will automatically park the HDD heads. If the hard drive is not in a safe place and it is not being accessed, the HDD protection software will reduce the input/output activity on the hard drive. If the computer is restarted, the software will transfer the state of the HDD heads from the Park to Active mode.
In addition to automatic HDD protection, there is the option to activate the HDD protection software manually when the computer is in a power down state for an extended time period (not less than 15 minutes), to prevent head parking. The HDD protection software also provides the option to save the hard drive configuration and the owner’s data if the computer will be accidentally turned off.
I’ve always thought that this hard drive protection thing sounded kinda stupid – what happens if you leave your computer on and use the mouse for a few hours? How does it protect the hard drive?
