There are two Chinese political institutions
that rely upon kinship: the throne and the state.
With the former, the State does not stand
above the individual, but rather on the
social level of the family, in which the
founders are venerated, the line of ruler
filial children represents the continuity
of the dynasty and is deemed to be the
primary beneficiary of the rules of the
family; in the state the person of the
ruler is paramount. With the latter, the
whole of society is individualized and
based upon the principle of personal
association. The state is not only
legally constituted, but also ranked by
degrees of status; the most developed
individuals make up the elite group,
especially the emperor, who is the
undivided symbol of the state, and to
whom the power of the ruler is
confined….
