SkimID3 is a console application written in C++. It supports WMA, MP3, Ogg, WAV, and ASF. SkimID3 reads information from sound files in specified formats, and saves metainformation on standard output. SkimID3 supports metadata extraction from soundtrack files as MP3, Ogg, WMA, ASF and WAV files.
SkimID3 searches for the first matching file (based on extension) and reads information from it. Information about ID3v1, ID3v2 and id3v3 tags is supported in WMA, MP3, Ogg and WAV files. File parameters are documented in the SkimID3.HTM (English) or SkimID3C.HTM (Czech) HTML documentation.
SkimID3 has a search tree of categories. When a search tree is started SkimID3 displays information about all of its categories. When SkimID3 searches for a file in a category it starts in the first available category. When SkimID3 uses tags with ID3v2 or id3v3 format it always starts in the root category.
SkimID3 read metadata from the first frame of a WMA or MP3 file, that does not start with the ID3v1 tag. Metadata can be read only when SkimID3 is given file parameter as only single file or when it is given path parameter. Metadata are NOT read from files with frame number higher then 0.
SkimID3 reads from single file or from path (list of files) given in command line. It outputs metadata in the format AttributeName=Attribute value. Information of all tags of the files can be output when given parameter /Set is used.
Description of parameters:
/D (or /Description)
Generates HTML documentation file SkimID3.HTM (English) or SkimID3C.HTM (Czech) in the current directory.
The list of categories is read from this file. When more then one category is given SkimID3 starts in the first category.
The parameter /Description MUST be supplied. This parameter is separated from name of the file by the same token as file parameter. Format of output is described in parameter /D.

SkimID3 Validation was developed with an aim to demonstrate a universal technique to read metainformation from sound files in many different formats like MP3, Ogg, WMA, ASF, WAV, and verify that the values of the obtained information are correct.
SkimID3 Validation means that there is a regular expression and a utility for the validation of the regular expression. The utility returns an error message when a data file is in a format that does not satisfy the regular expression.

The regular expression can be defined in this way:

In order to read and/or modify sound files, SkimID3 requires the sample rate, number of channels and bit depth to be specified when a sound file is opened.
The application uses buffers to store samples. For every read operation, it needs one buffer for each channel (or logical group of channels). A buffer usually is 8192 byte in size. If read or write errors are detected, an error message is logged in the console window.

What’s New in the?
SkimID3 or SkimID3 application allows to read metainformation from sound files. The files can be played in the browser, as WAV files without GUIs or they can be played directly from the file system in the console.
Applications are available in German, English, Czech. For Czech applications additional documentation is available.
Since version 0.2.0 a GUI based program has been created – Sound Doctor – for a better integration into Windows systems. With the Sound Doctor application files can be inspected and set into the current file system in a completely new fashion.
Since version 0.8.0 SkimID3 supports ID3v1 and ID3v2 metainformation. This allows to search for all IDs and to create ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags in the inspected file or in a separate file. Additionally SkimID3 creates a complete or filtered ID3v2 metadata dump.
