In a search query, use distance=1 for first time?
I am querying my db with the following code:
$q = “SELECT * FROM $this->table WHERE user_id=$user_id AND display_name LIKE ‘%$name%'”;
It’s working great for finding a query with “display_name” if $name exists, but it is returning no results if the query only contains $name.
I’ve tried modifying the above code to:
$q = “SELECT * FROM $this->table WHERE user_id=$user_id AND display_name LIKE ‘%$name%’ AND distance=1”;
Which has the effect of returning no results if the $name exists. But what if the query only contains $name? Would distance=1 not be necessary then?

As the manual says:
If no distance is specified, Lucene calculates a distance based on the
field’s edit distance. This is a tradeoff between finding as many
instances as possible and finding the closest instance.
In this case, the edit distance to the empty string is 1, so a distance of 1 will get you no results.
In the specific case of LIKE, you can specify a distance of 0 (or larger, for greater specificity) to get no results:
SELECT *
FROM YourTable
WHERE
user_id = 123
AND display_name LIKE ‘%a%’
AND distance = 0;
This will find results like:
SELECT *
FROM YourTable
WHERE
user_id = 123
AND display_name LIKE ‘%a’
as long as the starting position is somewhere in the document. This also will not match if the word is at the start of a document.
In this case, the edit distance to the empty string is 2, so a distance of 0 will not find any results.
I believe that the performance in most cases will be worse with a distance of 1, however.
