# Chapter 2: Understanding Layers
In this chapter, you’ll learn how to use Photoshop’s layer editing features to create, modify, and delete layers, as well as the effects that layers have on each other. You’ll also explore the layer modes and learn how to apply those modes to your image.
# Exercise 1: Creating a New Layer and Applying a Mode
You’re creating a new layer in the Background layer by choosing Layer→New→Layer From Background. Choose a color for the layer and, using the Exposure tab, try out a few effects until you find one that you like. When you have something that you like, copy it to the Paint Bucket on the tool palette and paste it to the image where you want it (see Figure 2-1).

When you’re done, make sure to choose a black-and-white or grayscale mode for your layer (as shown in Figure 2-2). Darken the layer slightly by applying an Adjustment layer with a black-and-white mode and a medium amount of opacity. Use the adjustment’s layer mask to control the opacity of the layer. Experiment with the value in the palette; the more light you reduce, the more dark your image will appear.

# Exercise 2: Creating a Layer Over a Layer
In this exercise, you’ll learn how to create a new layer over an existing layer by using the Layer→Layer Via Drawing.
Open a new image. You’ll use the same image from the previous exercise in this chapter. If you don’t have that image open, open it now from the book’s companion website at www.sybex.com/go/photoshopessentials2016.

As an atheist, Kunz has an expectation of a “neutral and inclusive environment, free from religious indoctrination,” FFRF adds.
“The district’s decision to restrict secular displays in the presence of students highlights the need for equal access in religion education,” Seidel writes.

The patient underwent a neoadjuvant chemotherapy with Erlotinib. Nine months later, the patient had complete resolution of the tumor and PSA values remained within the normal range. The neoadjuvant chemotherapy with Erlotinib was efficient in our patient.
