There are many different schools of thought on how to use Photoshop. Some people get along just fine without ever using layers, some people layer every image they modify, and some people avoid using layers because they feel the final product looks too “Photoshopish.”

## Exercise 2.1: Start Using Layers
In this exercise, you’re going to use the Layers feature in Photoshop and illustrate how it works. Before jumping into the Layers feature, first open a new document by using File⇒New. Use the following settings to create a 936 × 648-pixel, 72 dpi, RGB color document:
* **File name:** CreateLayer.psd
* **File format:** Photoshop (.psd)
* **Resolution:** 72 dpi
* **Image mode:** RGB
After you create the new document, go to the Layers palette on the left side of the screen and press the New Layer button to add a new layer.
Before creating a new layer, you may want to choose a size that will be easy to work with. Use the Layers palette options to set the layer height and width to 600 pixels. At 72 dpi, a 600-pixel layer is about 1.67 inches. You can change the width and height of a layer in the Layers palette after it’s been created.
After you change the layer dimensions, you see an asterisk (*) in the top-right corner of the layer thumbnail, as shown in Figure 2-2.

After you change a layer’s size, you need to press the OK button to save the size change.
The Layers palette is a useful tool for organizing and grouping your layers. Each layer can have its own layer mask, which is a selection that enables you to hide parts of your image that you want to protect.
