Convert Levenberg-Marquardt method to be used in ODEINT()?

I’m following the book Introduction to ODEINT package (5.4) by and I’m trying to solve the following equation using a simple variable step solver:
$\dot{x}(t) = a – 2x(t) + x^2(t)$
I’ve already solved using the initial step method, but I’m not familiar with the Levenberg-Marquardt method. I’m wondering if someone could help me convert this to be used in ODEINT()?
Thanks,
Mark

A:

The Levenberg-Marquardt method is based on the simple idea of maximizing the function $J(x,y,f(x,y))$ (where $x$ is a vector of independent variables, $y$ is a vector of dependent variables, $f$ is the residual and $J$ is some cost function). For the case that there is only one independent variable ($x$) the above function writes as
$$J(x,y,f(x,y))=f(x,y)-
abla_x f(x,y)^T (x-x_0)+
abla_y f(x,y)^T (y-y_0),$$
where $x_0,y_0$ are the initial values of $x,y$. The second term ($-
abla_x f(x,y)^T (x-x_0)$) is the projection of the residual $f$ onto the vector $(x-x_0)$ and is often referred to as the norm of the residual. The third term ($
abla_y f
