This Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services task does exactly what it says, it downloads emails from a mail server and stores them into files on the filesystem or deletes them from the mail server.
The task combines database connectivity with scripting: although not very complex, it includes a database cursor and about a dozen IF statements to loop through the attachments and text files. You can easily modify it to check for any other kind of file in the same directory and combine it with a utility task to execute any type of executable.
For security reasons, it can’t access the network, so you’ll need to copy the files it reads from disk to a local network directory.
The task is based on Michael’s solution to “Downloading Email attachments from a mail server”. Although it is not as flexible as the original script, I believe that this task is a good starting point for a solution that you will have to customize to your needs.
A word of caution: if you use this task, you’ll need to know how to use a SQL cursor and use file paths. Thus, we’ve included a task that you’ll need to modify to your needs.

To install Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services on the Machine where you will be running this task on (if your SQL Server is not already on the machine, you will need to download it from Microsoft);
Data – This is needed because the files we’re downloading will require data to be in the database tables before we can download them;
Notes – Data and notes are crucial, because you’ll need to know which files are attachments and need to be stored in the database before they are downloaded. You’ll also need to download the text files as notes, after the mail attachments, so you’ll need to know that too! In this example, the only attachments are.zip files, so you’ll need to write a function or a script that will take the zip extension and look if it is a file that needs to be downloaded;
SQL server – The Mail server you’ll be downloading from and reading the email from;
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools – The installer for this tool;

You can configure your task to download a zip file containing the entire mail that can be extracted into a folder and used in the future.
You can also configure the task to download only the attachments, i.e. those files the mail contains that are not in the zip file.
Or you can even configure the task to download only the attachments that match a certain criteria, e.g. they have a certain size.
