We reached out to a panel of experts to help make the process a little less daunting. From talking about what to say to a girl’s parents to making sure you don’t get stuck when things go south, here are our favorite tips and strategies for a successful dating life.
Talking to Girls’ Parents:
Megan Neely, editor-at-large and relationship expert for Ellevate.com:
As much as the rest of the world may call on some well-worn clichés, the best way to tell your parents that you’re dating someone new is to tell them.
Start with something like “Mom, Dad, I have something exciting to tell you,” and then tell them. That’s not always realistic. Not only does it take a lot of courage, but it’s also hard to make an opening with someone you’ve just met.
But the thing is, you really have nothing to lose. If you’re going to get into a relationship with a new guy and not your parents, you’re the one going to suffer. Your parents will be excited for you and always want the best for you. It will only make sense to communicate with them.
While you don’t want to be the kind of boyfriend or girlfriend who brings your parents along to meet the parents of other people you date—even if their parents are a lot like yours—we don’t think there is anything wrong with your mom or dad having a conversation with the guy you’re dating.
Talking to Girls:
Jenny Sun, author of Jenny-Sun.com and blogger at The Art of Charm:
What I tell my younger girlfriend and her mom is that they can’t “interrupt” the first date. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things I can learn from her mom, or her, at least.
One of the best things I can do is to listen. I can’t really give her advice until she’s told me the specifics of what happened, and I can’t help her unless she’s asked.
But I can listen, which is something I don’t often do on first dates. I’m about the most horrible listener on the planet. It’s just not something I do very well.
Watching and listening is a great start to learning what you can do to help them. I can’t even imagine what a first date would feel like, but I can tell you I was an awful friend to my younger, more https://idateadvice.com/how-to-have-safe-hookups-online-best-secure-sex-guide

As a woman, you already have a lot to consider when it comes to dating. From your clothing choices to your mannerisms to your day-to-day interactions, you probably make sure not to make a fool of yourself. You might have learned how to play up your assets and play down your flaws, but you’ll also probably realize that this all-important skill set doesn’t translate to dating. Whether you’re single or you’re married, no matter how confident or well-traveled you are, you’re no doubt aware of the pitfalls of dating and the things that make people keep their distance.

This post is about everything you need to know to be a great date, whether you’re on a dating site, on a night out, or in a casual relationship. Know that while some of these tips may seem more critical to you than others, it’s a huge mistake to assume that someone else will know what works best for you. It’s worth remembering that there’s no age limit to dating: Sure, you may think 18 is the ideal age to get married because you think it’s the perfect time to start having kids, but there are plenty of others who feel differently, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t try to figure out what works best for you when it comes to dating, whether you’re seeking romance or a partner to have fun with.
DATE Someone Who Shares Your Interests and Values
You can learn a lot about people through their interests and values, and if you feel as if you have a lot in common with someone, you’re already off to a great start. Consider these questions and ask them of yourself as well:
Are you a night owl or an early bird?
Do you want to be with someone who works long hours, is social, and is a lot of fun to be around, or someone who spends their free time relaxing, reading, or hanging out with friends?
Are you family-oriented, work-oriented, or do you prefer to be a slob?
Is someone who loves their job to the point that it’s all they can think about, or someone who has a good job and is a great addition to the workforce?
Are you a frequent traveler or someone who appreciates things that are close to home and staying put?
