The evidence convinces the reader who had occasion to visit the place, that, as in Egypt, in the time of Moses, the use of a name for a place where mankind had lived before the Flood, was yet retained by the Israelites, who had not the conception of a time of universal deluge, which must have occurred before their existance had commenced. The writings of the ancients respecting the names of places, can have no value, that it would be usual to substitute one word for another which means the same thing, because the meaning was well understood before those writings were compiled. No slight remark is, however, to be taken from the Biblical account, of a mistaken use of this sort by the people of the present time. The name of the town which Moses knew, was a name the people retained, probably because it was a name which had been current among them from a very early age. At the time when Moses wrote his record, the name of Etam was all that was necessary to the information; (Ex. 33:3, 4). a Name for the Place, Which the People had Known from a Very Early Age. The northern tribes became so attached to the memorial so often mentioned, that they were unwilling to destroy it, even when they changed their place of habitation, (Ex. 13:3, 4) ; and a local memory was thus transmitted to their successors. What we have in the case is a record of usage at the time Moses wrote; for Moses lived about forty years after the Exodus, and his record is the older one. Both the princely and priestly families of the tribe of Benjamin, retained the custom of calling their town after the memorial erected in memory of it. The same memorial was preserved in the place where they worshipped, and in all houses which contained it. (Ex. 13:14-17). The memorial would seem to have been a very sacred object. It was probably nothing else than a stone with an inscription on it; and we cannot doubt that it was kept with great care. The memorial in Ex. 33:3, 4, was the stone set up at the back of the tabernacle, and was called the Membra Hebraica, or “Memorial of the Hebrews,” by the ancients.
