This is very nice and easy to use plugin, especially if you are the kind of user that needs some features to help you write some nice piano sheet music. But you can also use it as an electronic instrument that will do your logo, design or any other kind of music for you. To me the only problem is that it works with a Steinberg Virus GT-2 which is expensive (ok, I know it is a very nice piano).
The interface is very easy to use, I was able to get a file that has the settings I wanted in less than 5 minutes and this is really the most important thing, you don’t have to search and analyze the settings to get the thing you need. You just need to put on the presets and you are ready to go.
The preset I found on the forums that uses the Virus are:
Normal (35ms rise/fall time)
Fast (60ms rise/fall time)
Slow (150ms rise/fall time)
Rise (5 lines, no fall, 8 or 10ms rise time, 8 or 10ms fall time)
You can use these presets or you can create your own preset. In the preferences you can use the Pianist Librarian to edit all the settings for you, so you don’t have to know how to create a preset. You can also click the button on the panel to create your own preset.
I must say that I really like the way PenSampler 18 is working, but I still need a way to get the pen to stop. It would be cool to see this feature in the future.

The PenSampler 18 is a unique new synth based on a frequency modulation oscillator with two envelopes. The front panel includes a Q (quality) switch to control the oscillator. The oscillator is modified by two sinewave modulators called Phase and Velocity (position and speed), each with two envelopes to control the modulation. The two envelopes are used to control the attack, decay, sustain and release values of the envelopes. The design of the synth was based on a dream and I wanted it to sound very new and with unique sounds. The oscillator is best described as something like an analog transistor radio, you can alter the treble or bass range of the oscillator, or you can change the filter Q and resonance. The quality (Q) switch controls how much it is affected by all of the other controls. This could be used to shape the sound.

Very few controls for the synth, just the oscillator and two envelopes, very easy to use and learn. The oscillator can be connected to different outputs and effects.
Modifications
Added filter with Q and resonance control. The envelope controls are used to increase and decrease the cutoff frequency of the filter. Added custom stereo panning to the oscillator.
