re-writing a file in Python

I have a bunch of python files that are automatically generated using a bash script that take files from a directory, run a python script, and create a new file in a similar directory.
This works well, except that I need to edit an existing file in the directory, and then run the python script to generate the new file.
It has been suggested that I write a bash script that does this, but I want to avoid having to keep running that script. I’m trying to avoid having to open up another shell window.
Anyone know of a python library that can perform these tasks?
