.The Freedom From Religion Foundation has repeatedly urged the U.S. Department of Energy to end its taxpayer-funded report on faith that states, “pagans, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, and others are each protected by the Constitution.”

In a new letter (PDF) sent to DOE Deputy Secretary Dan Brouillette, FFRF President Dan Barker points to the anti-Muslim prejudice displayed in the DOE’s treatment of Islam as a religion and calls on the DOE to end its policy of propagating sectarian religious bigotry.

“As your agency has already acknowledged, Islam is not a ‘religion’ but rather a sociopolitical system with some religiously-based beliefs,” Barker wrote. “While Muslims can be true to the ideals of Islam, there is no religion-based requirement that anyone must, or even can, be a follower of that religion,” he continues. “The law considers Muslims an ethnicity, not a religion.”

The DOE released its report on this topic on January 17, 2014, claiming that the U.S. was a “nation of laws” that “uphold[ed] religious liberty for all faiths.” But, as FFRF had pointed out in a prior letter, that is false. “Under federal law, people of no religious faith are fully protected by the Establishment Clause,” states the letter. “In addition, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of a U.S. government official who publicly expressed his belief in God and objected to a religious prayer before Congress. “As such, it seems you intended a second message by highlighting the true nature of Islam as a religion—as something that is inclusive of other faiths,” Barker added.
