Book-of-the-Month Club was an American subscription mail-order book club, founded in 1926. It offered a current selection of best-selling books for a low, predictable monthly fee to subscribers, who could opt for a 6-month or 12-month subscription. The club distributed some 200,000 reprints by the middle of the decade. BOMC later expanded into the magazine and school textbook businesses, and in the 1970s shifted its emphasis to current best-sellers. It lost money in the mid-1980s, and was liquidated in 1991.
The members of BOMC were known as “Clubbers”.

Simon & Schuster is an American publisher founded in 1942 by Robert Giroux, the brother of the poet Robert Lowell. In 1947, Simon & Schuster acquired the Book-of-the-Month Club, and in 1950 it became a majority owner in the Reader’s Digest Association, which in turn later became the United Feature Syndicate.
