I’ve played the majority of games by Blind Studios, so I’m not going to “shoot the messenger”, as I truly believe in what Blind Studios is trying to do.
However, I must admit that Elden Ring is the only game so far by Blind Studios that has failed to get my undivided attention and held my interest only for as long as the first hour or so.
Story-wise, the game is not bad. After all, I have no idea what a period of time has passed in the Lands Between, and no one from the Northern Kingdoms is explaining what’s going on to me, I must assume that it’s just another story like all the others.
Combat-wise, there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s pretty much a hack-and-slash RPG with a very real time combat system and is very action-oriented.
Combat in this game is simple, and very easy to understand and well-paced. What’s not so good is that you can’t make any kind of choices in combat. If you’re squirming around in a battle, and dying, you’ll be sent back to a cut-scene so that you can experience what happened in the battle again, and, trust me, you’ll come out of the battle with a different mechanic.
Speaking of mechanics, there are three different types of combat in this game. First, there are skill-checks (which include sword/melee combat) you must make in order to succeed. The second is physical combat and, finally, the third is magic. You have no choice in when you use them; you only have a choice of how you use them. The mechanics are very important. Let me show you in a different way.
If you check out the video below, you’ll see that, in the video, you are supposed to cut off the head of a monster as a quick way to defeat it. However, in the actual game, you’ll have to use a different mechanic and hack up its lower body.
I wish they’d give me some choice in how I use skills in combat, or, better yet, give me more skills that I can use.
On a somewhat related note, the overall look of the game is… Well, for lack of a better word, it’s generic. There’s no real sense of realism in the game in terms of how each area looks. There are no real landscapes, for example.
