## **How to Use this Book**
There are three types of people who come to these pages, all of whom will have their own way to use this book:
**Individual Photographer** This individual might be a new photographer who wants to get started with Photoshop, or an experienced photographer who is looking for some new tricks.
**Business Photographers** This is a Photoshop book for commercial photographers. You’ll need to pay special attention to the sections on working with retouching, since those are the parts that are particularly important in a business environment.
**Style Photographers** This book is for designers who like to create their own images, usually for the web.
Remember that this is a compilation of solutions to common problems. For an individual photographer, only a few pages might be sufficient to get started.
However, for a business photographer, many pages might be needed before you learn everything you can from Photoshop.
On the other hand, if you want to learn to create your own images, you might be done in just a couple of chapters.
For these reasons, the chapters are organized and the book is broken down into areas of focus. You can look up the individual topics and navigate around the chapters to find the information you want. You’ll also be able to jump back to the beginning for a quick review or just to check your understanding.

New features in Adobe Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements 10 brings a range of new features, from organizing your photos and videos to creating new styles and graphics. Here’s a summary of some of the most significant changes in Elements 10:
New Organizer
It has long been possible to create groups of similar photos for your Family Album, for example. Elements 10 offers group folders as a new organizing feature. You can create these folders as you shoot your photos, and then browse them later in the Organizer. (New in CC)
Most photo management programs include options to save your photos in different locations, so that you can, for example, shoot a landscape photo in the city and then back it up on your computer. The new Organizer includes one-click options for saving your shots in a variety of locations, including the cloud.
New File Manager
Previously, your photos were organized in folders based on the file name. Elements 10 adds a more visual system to organize your images, based on the date and location where you took the photo.
As you shoot photos, Elements 10 adds new ways to arrange and save them. In the File Manager, you can see a series of details for each photo. For example, you can see the date you took the photo, or where you were when you took the picture. Elements also makes it easy to save your photos automatically to the cloud and to your computer.
Color Picker
You can bring up a Color Picker window in Photoshop Elements to select colors for the new File Manager.
From the photo you want to modify, click the down arrow in the upper right corner to bring up the Color Picker. You can select a new color or modify the existing color.
New Features for online photo editing
Elements 10 features a wide range of new online photo editing tools. With these tools, you can add effects, add borders, and even correct common errors, such as color or lens distortion.

The sunset again is slow.
The sun was slowly going down.
I just wanted to make the sun disappear for a bit. So sometimes the few minutes I would have to get shots like this, I would try and get it at the last minute. Sometimes that meant getting it with no people in it, but often I would end up with people just sitting and talking in it. The colors were so worth the wait.
The sunset was a bit earlier in the day than usual, so instead of using my 10mm lens, I often use my 35mm. But the 35mm on the Lumix GH2 has a wider angle of view. Below are a few of my favorite images from last weekend.

One of my favorite weddings of the year was the wedding of Meagan and Charlie two weekends ago. It was an early fall wedding with not only an unexpected shower a day prior to the wedding (which we were super excited about because showers are great things), but also a rain that was coming, and arriving in time for the wedding. In addition to the rain, there were tons of leafs falling, and the color of the leaves added to the beauty of the wedding.
Not only did we have the rain, it was a rare combination of rain, and a fall sunset. It was one of those nights that I knew I would have to ride my bike out to an area away from the house to get some shots. Since I was on my house retreat, I had to head to a remote spot on the road. 1. **Create a new Photoshop document.**
2. **Open the Brush tool and choose the No Brush preset.**
The Brush panel opens with a sample preset that includes 10 types of brushes.
3. **While holding the down arrow key, click the Brush icon.**
Photoshop opens an Options dialog box, as shown in Figure 6-1. It includes three tabs: Brushes, Appearance, and Tools.
4. **Adjust the number of points in your brush (where individual brush tips are joined).**
5. **In the Tool panel, choose the Brush Tip Shape arrow to open the Shape menu.**
Photoshop displays a preview of the shape and the three sampling locations shown in Figure 6-2.
6. **Choose the round brush.**
Your brush tips are now joined into a round shape.
If your brush tips are too sharp or hard, you can soften them using the S-curves in the Appearance dialog box.

This tool is a radial sampler — you can paint a brush tip at any point on the brush and view the color at the center of the tool.
9. **Click the left mouse button to activate the Brush tool.**
The Radial Sampler displays a picket fence shape, as shown in Figure 6-3, and is available to create a mosaic, watercolor-like paint effects, or to paint in a corner.
10. **Drag to create a radial pattern on your canvas.**
Figure 6-4 shows the paintbrush tips that you created while you painted. As I started the paintbrush tool at the top of the brush preview, the paintbrush tips are displayed in the lower left of the preview box. When I moved down the preview, they moved to the bottom right.
